It took me almost four years to complete this painting. “Let Them Eat Cake” is my personal vision on these strange times: I call it ‘The Modern Middle Ages’. The cake stands for the world, and we are eating and hollowing out the world. I painted it after Hieronymus Bosch painting ‘The Haywain’ from around 1500 AD. Th etitle comes from Queen Marie Antoinette’s famous remark when the people stormed the palace and she asked one of her servants: ‘What’s going on.?’ The servant replied: ‘It is the people, they are storming the palace for they are so poor that they can’t afford to buy any bread…’To which the Queen answered: ‘Well if they can’t buy any bread: ‘Let Them Eat Cake.!’ We are now living in a similair situation where the ‘One Percent’ owns almost everything and millions of people are dying of hunger. I hope a renaissance is on the way…
